Data-Driven Analysis of European Portuguese Nasal Vowel Dynamics in Bilabial Contexts

چکیده

European Portuguese (EP) is characterized by a large number of nasals encompassing five phonemic nasal vowels. One notable characteristic these sounds their dynamic nature, involving both oral and gestures, which makes study characterization challenging. The vowels, in particular, has been addressed using wide range technologies: early descriptions were based on acoustics nasalance, later expanded with articulatory data obtained from EMA real-time magnetic resonance (RT-MRI). While providing important results, studies limited the discrete nature EMA-pellets, only small grasp vocal tract; time resolution MRI data; speakers. To tackle limitations, to take advantage recent advances RT-MRI allowing 50 fps, novel acquired for 11 EP work presented here explores capabilities recently proposed data-driven approaches model extracted assess suitability investigating characteristics this end, we explore tract configurations over time, along coordination velum lip aperture bilabial contexts vowels congeners. Overall, results show that generalized additive mixed models (GAMMs) functional linear (FLMMs) provide an elegant approach multiple More specifically, found oro-pharyngeal differences tongue low mid vowels: vowel track was larger pharyngeal smaller palatal region three non-high evidence raised more advanced position Even though aimed at exploring applicability methods, outcomes already highlight interesting

Nasal Coda and Vowel Nasality in Brazilian Portuguese

Despite different theoretical perspectives and methodologies, nasal vowels in Brazilian Portuguese are characterized by their variability. Such variability can be understood in terms of vowel height related to velum movement (Clumeck, 1976; Cagliari, 1977) or in terms of segmental right context (Almeida, 1976; Cagliari, 1977; Shosted, 2006; Lovatto, 2008; Medeiros et al., 2008). Brazilian Portu...

European portuguese nasal vowels: an EMMA study

In this paper new EMMA data regarding European Portuguese nasals is presented. Some details about corpus constitution, recording and annotation is given. First results from analysis are presented. Quantitative analysis of velum movement was done for nasal vowels between stops. For the other contexts representative examples are presented and qualitatively analysed. In all contexts nasal vowels a...

Physical modeling of vowel-bilabial plosive sound production

Downstream of the vocal folds, it is often assumed that all the kinetic energy of the glottal jet is dissipated by turbulence. Although this assumption is reasonable for normal voicing, there are many configurations for which a constriction or even an occlusion of the vocal tract occurs and leads to a significant pressure recovery. Such a phenomenon occurs during the production of vowel-bilabia...

Speech rate effects on european portuguese nasal vowels

This paper presents new temporal information regarding the production of European Portuguese (EP) nasal vowels, based on new EMMA data. The influence of speech rate on duration of velum gestures and their coordination with consonantic and glottal gestures were analyzed. As information on relative speed of articulators is scarce, the parameter stiffness for the nasal gestures was also calculated...
